North Beach looked likely to out-muscle the young lions, and the start of the game showed the marking advantage that their height provided. A very different experience for the team from last week, very firmly on the back foot.
To their credit the boys stuck together and kept working at the packs, eventually finding a goal through a great mark and kick from Finn. North Beach were very tough to beat in the packs though, and provided strong leads in the forward line.
Cambell and Ben M were again our major ball-winners through the centre, with Jayson, Lachie and Finn providing targets in the forward line. We did lose shape in the second half though, with more of the team joining the pack, and no options at half forward. Something to work on at training this week.

Final Word:
A pleasing effort against a very strong opposition. Resilience and determination was shown by most of the team - and the backing up and supporting of each other was good to see.
A lovely sunny Sunday for the third round, a perfect setting for a year 4 footy game. Not much of a breeze, but Subi started with the little assistance it provided. The first quarter saw a ball-following pack develop, but it was pleasing to see the young lions spread out better than Scarborough, and manage to get the ball out to our runners time after time.
Peter and Cambell provided a lot of this run, ably supported by Jayson and Ben M. Fraser stepped up again to give us 15 players, and once again impressed with his running and kicking.
The leading from our forwards was successful, with goals from both marks and good roving, while the defenders were able to keep a clean sheet. A very impressive team effort.
We'll be working on our leading and kicking to targets at training this week.

Game Summary
The Subi Year 4's were fired up for a good game after the inspiring visit of the Dockers players to training the week. From the first ball up there was an obvious determination to win the ball, and an improvement in finding targets with both kicking and handballs.
Jayson and Cambell had some great runs from the wing, and Cameron again proved lethal near the goals. Lachie, Tom and Rex took some great marks, while Peter and Ben M provided more pressure in the centre than we had last week. The only disappointment was that we didn't get many opportunities to kick in after a point like we'd practised at training...
Thanks to the year 3 Auskickers who stepped up this week to add some numbers while our Subiaco Primary players were on camp, and a big thank you to Marist who lent us two players each quarter, with no complaints and great sportsmanship.

Final Word:
A very pleasing effort across the board, and a great first home game. Gathering the ball on the run will be the focus of our next training session (at the end of the holidays, 4th May at Rosalie Primary Oval).
Opposition: Wembley Downs Cats White
Venue: Empire Avenue Reserve
Game Overview
A great start for the year 4's - who've all been eager to play this first Junior Football game since stepping up from Auskick. With everyone in full SJFC kit they looked great from the start, and the skills they've developed over summer were quickly on show. The strong breeze favoured Subi in the first quarter (after Jamie winning the toss and making a wise choice). A qucikly snapped goal from Cameron saw us take the early lead. Wembley Downs are a strong club though, and managed to steady into the breeze and score a quick reply.
With things about even at the start of the 2nd quarter, the dominance of WD's number 13 came to the fore. Running and kicking with the breeze, Wembley Downs put the Subi defenders under constant pressure. I'm pleased to say that we were equal to the task, with Lachie C taking a few strong defensive marks, and the Ben M breaking free of the pack to push the ball our way. We will be working on clearances this week at training though. Thanks to Harry for stepping up to fill Lachie's big shoes when he injured his knee.
The third quarter was our last chance to use the wind, which had picked up at half time. Some great marks from Jayson and kicking from Cambell improved our score, and Rex was fantastic running through the centre. The opposition did well into the breeze though, and still managed a couple of goals.
The final quarter saw Wembley Downs lock the ball in to their half for much of the quarter, though Subi restricted some of the scoring, with a great touch on the line from Ben W. Kicking into the breeze at the other end proved difficult, with high balls floating (almost backwards) and low kicks hitting a wall of Wembley Downs backs. Kick ins after a point gives us something else to work on at training.

An impressive first game for the Yr 4s, with the Wembley Downs Parent mentor commenting to me after the game about the great spirit in which the game was played, and the fantastic sportmanship of our SJFC players. A big thank you to our umpire also, who did an outstanding job in what he assured us was his first game - well done!
