Subiaco 12s versus North Beach

Subiaco ran through a big banner in blazing sunshine at Rosalie Park to celebrate seven of the boys reaching 50 game milestones. Congratulations to Josh, Raf, Reid, Angus, Oscar, Will and James.

The visitors jumped out strong and Josh, Jack M and Jack H were all called on to do good defensive work. James provided drive forward and kicked Subiaco’s first goal.

Mo was also working hard and kicked a goal virtually out of the centre but at quarter time Subi trailed by eight points.

The second quarter became a dogged affair as the wind picked up. Subi’s defence again came under pressure but held firm. Christian and Angus were lively in the forward line.

The Lions kicked five points and the visitors just two points for the quarter. North Beach led by five points at half time.

A determined smother by Raf set the tone in the third quarter as Subiaco continued to press hard, with Cam and Mo applying good tackles, Will sharking the packs and Josh, Jack M and James again being prominent as Subiaco hit the front.

Urged on by coach Rob GA to finish the season on a high, the Lions blitzed it in the final quarter.

Consecutive goals by Jack M busted the game open and Subiaco ran on to kick 5.6 for the quarter to a solitary point by North Beach.

At the final siren Subiaco had notched a convincing victory and the call went up: “Song, song, song”, as the season ended with a loud and boisterous rendition of the team anthem.

Rob GA said there had been contributions by all players but his awards for the day went to James, Mo, Jack M, Cam and Tom.

A big thank you to Rob and Jonine for all their hard work again. It was a fabulous year, peppered with highlights as the group as a whole and the boys as individuals walked that little bit taller each week.

GO SUBI!

Subiaco Vs Swanbourne

A cold blustery wind was blowing off the ocean and there wasn’t a nudist in sight as the Subi Lions headed south to take on Swanbourne in the second last game of the season.

At the first bounce the ball ricocheted around the centre like a pinball before Swanbourne belted it downwind and saw the ball roll over the line for a minor score, the first of the day and the first of many for both sides. It wasn’t long though before the Lions bared their claws, with Jack M, Tom and Christian combining to feed the ball to a fast running Tom who slotted home the first major of the game. The Swannies bounced back quickly to put their first goal on the board, but as the wind shifted, so did the game, with Tom grabbing a good pass from Will to score his second and Cam picking out Christian in the goal square where he also converted truly. Despite some frantic defensive work by Jack H and Jake the Rake, Swanbourne grabbed another six pointer and a flurry of points, quickly answered by a long goal from Subi ring-in Petra, who dashed through the centre like a gazelle being chased by a lion... or not, in this case. Jack followed suit with a ‘don’t argue’ palm off, before banging through his first, but the Swannies came back with a late goal against the flow.

The Swannies started the second like they finished the first, bagging another goal, but strong work in defence by Josh, to Jake to Jack M resulted in Christian snapping truly for his second. The boys kept applying the pressure, with Will picking out Jack, across to Cam for another six points. Pushing into the wind the Swannies grabbed a late goal and Tom squeezed in a late point to end the quarter. At half time the Lions were just in front.

Just like the second quarter Swanbourne started off the scoring with a goal, despite some desperate head over the ball work by a defiant Raf. But it wasn’t long before Subi put the foot down and slick work by James out of the centre saw him split the centre with a raking right footer. This sparked a rush of blood in the Lion’s camp, with Will, Josh, Christian and Josh again all taking flying shots resulting in minor scores. Swanbourne broke the spell with a quick major, but a miracle snap from Cam in the pocket evaded everyone to sneak through for six points. Swanbourne came back at Subi late in the quarter to even things up, but a smother by Christian resulted in a late goal to James – an example of a fantastic one percenter in footy that can help win matches.

It was game-on in quarter four, with Tom feeding Jack M for a goal, followed by an answering goal to Swanbourne. Jack H, Oscar and Monty – gaining form after a long spell on the sidelines with an injury - were burrowing under the packs and locking things down across the half back, allowing Angus to break free and casually checkside a kick to Jake for another Subi goal. With the game going down to the wire in the dying stages Swanbourne had one last shot on goal, but hit the post. Our boys locked it down in the final minutes and came home with a hard fought five point win.

It was a hard game, under tough conditions that left Angus with a split lip and many others sporting bruises like badges of honour from the contest. It was also the game that provided the glue that will keep the majority of this playing group roaring for at least another season as we head towards our final home game next Sunday.

12s ROUND 8 VS MARIST

Week after week the boys had been putting in super efforts and not always getting their rewards.

Would the reward come this week?

Marist had beaten the Lions on the MCG in their half-time game earlier in the month and there was a real air of determination as Subiaco took to the ground at Marist.

The early signs were good when Jack M burst through the centre of the ground and kicked a booming goal.

At the other end of the ground there was desperate defence, with James laying a great smother and Raf taking two telling marks, and at quarter time Subiaco had kicked 1.1 and kept Marist scoreless.

The second quarter saw some great play by Cam, who passed to Tom, who kicked a clever goal as he hugged the boundary line.

Mo was fierce in defence and Christian and others in the backline threw themselves in to repel Marist attacks, and Subiaco led by a point at the long break.

It was all hands on deck in the Subiaco back line in the third quarter, as time after time Marist attacked. Marist kicked just one goal amid a flurry of points but it was enough to see them lead by eight points going into the last quarter.

The last quarter saw Will shark an early goal to raise Subiaco hopes. Cam then hit the tall posts with a long shot and a shot from Tom was touched just on the line. Was fate against us? If so, the boys didn’t accept it.

Jack M kicked another goal, Raf produced a desperate smother, Angus and Cam joined the scorers and the Lions roared to a memorable 13-point victory.

The coach’s awards went to Cam, Jack M, Will, James, Raf and Mathew, a Marist player who had kindly agreed to help us out on the day.

But every single player in a Subi jumper stood tall. Well done.

THE 12s MELBOURNE TRIP 2011

After flying in on the Friday and a big meal of pizza and pasta in Lygon Street, the boys gathered early on Saturday for the bus ride to Doncaster’s ground.

It was surprisingly sunny but the ground was still heavier than the conditions in WA.

Doncaster kicked with the wind and down the slope in the opening quarter and the Lions defence got an early workout, holding out the home team for much of the term, with Mo throwing himself about with some determined work.

Oscar and Tom combined to get Subiaco’s first score on the board.

In the second quarter, Subiaco piled on the pressure, with Cam enjoying the big ground as he drove the ball forward and Josh, James and Jack M hauling in some good marks.

The Doncaster defence made some crucial interceptions in and around the goal square to keep Subiaco out.

The third quarter saw Subiaco defending grimly, with Jake, Tom and James showing outstanding determination and Will marking well.

The final term saw the Lions burst forward with drive for Cam to kick a goal and hit the post with another clever effort.

Jack H and Harry showed desperation in the packs and again the Doncaster defence was tested. The home team used the value of their bigger squad to finish the game full of running and notch a win which seemed more convincing on the scoreboard than it was on the ground.

After a bit of free time it was off to the MCG, where the Lions became St Kilda for the half-time match against Marist, who wore the colours of Collingwood.

Cam got the Lions off to a great start with an early goal before Marist got on top and ground out a win, despite determined play from Subiaco, who never gave in during a tough contest on the biggest stage in footy and a crowd of more than 60,000.

A big thank you to the organizers and also to Andrew, Lockie and Harry for joining the 12s for the adventure.

ROUND 7 VS CLAREMONT GOLD

A strong wind gave Claremont the advantage in the opening quarter but fierce attacks on the ball from both sides saw numerous points at both ends of the ground before they put majors on the board.

Jake set the standard for determination by running straight at the ball in the centre of the ground despite several Claremont players heading at him and Jack M kicked a fine goal.

Tom, James and Cam dragged in fine marks.

In the second quarter Josh pumped the ball forward.

Will marked well and kicked on to James who goaled.

Mo had two excellent shots on goal marked by the Claremont full back standing on the goal line and Angus produced two goals from clever sharking around the packs, and half time saw the scores almost level.

In the third quarter Claremont used the wind well and broke away to set up a big lead.

Subiaco fought on in the final quarter and there was dogged defence from Will and Reid.

Another spirited effort from the Lions and the rewards will be not far away.

The coach’s awards went to Jake, Josh and Reid

ROUND 6 VERSUS WEMBLEY DOWNS

Blazing sunshine greeted the boys as they ran onto the full-size ground at Rosalie Park.

The first quarter was marked by great endeavour by both teams as they went almost goal for goal.

There was plenty of determined team play, with Raff riding a bump and getting the ball out of the pack with the help of good shepherding from teammates.

Jack M held some excellent marks and Christian provided a lively avenue into attack.

Subiaco applied waves of heavy pressure early in the second term, providing the Wembley defence with plenty of work. Cam kicked two clever goals but Wembley responded to move clear of the Lions by half time.

The third quarter highlights included some good backing up and team work which featured a clever chain of hand ball.

The final term saw the Lions pour on the pressure with plenty of highlights around the ground.

A long kick by Jake to Tom ended in a goal and Jack H added his name to the goal scorer’s list.

Mo applied huge pressure in the packs, driving the ball forward and Reid and Andrew pulled in some timely marks.

The game closed with Josh dominating in the forward line and Subiaco well on top.

The Lions kicked four goals in the final quarter and kept Wembley to just two points. In the end the visitors ran out winners but Subiaco can draw great strength from the way they stuck at their task and came back at the end.

The coach’s awards for best players went to Oscar, Jack H, Cam, Angus, Raff and Mo.

Round 5 VERSUS NORTH BEACH TIGERS

A perfect blue sky could not disguise the early winter chill which hovered over Charles Riley Oval as the boys in the Lions colours looked to continue the rich form of the week before.

The first quarter was full of old-fashioned hustle around the ball and Subiaco got on the board first with some good work from Will and Jack M, before North Beach hit back with their own majors.

North Beach opened the scoring in the second quarter and forced some desperate Subiaco defence before a quick rebound saw the Lions respond on the scoreboard.

The third quarter saw Cam and Angus feature in some good team play as the Lions added to their tally.

A tough final term saw the Subiaco defence come under heavy pressure and James stamp his mark on the game before the siren saw the Lions run out victors for the second week in a row.

Subiaco 12s Game 3 versus Wembley Downs

The Mother’s Day fixture started with a run by the Mums through a special Mother’s Day banner and then the boys turned on a special performance.

Wembley Downs settled first and best and skipped away to an early lead but Subiaco responded well, and began to support each other and man up well in defence to stem the flow.

The second quarter proved telling. Wembley Downs played with a strong wind at their backs but the Subiaco defence withstood all that could be thrown at them with good shepherding, talking and backing each other up.

The midfield capitalised on the rebounds and the attackers continued the good work to bring Subiaco back into the game.

The third quarter saw Subiaco take charge with the wind. A six-goal burst, four of which were kicked in magnificent style by Jack Monaghan, put the Lions in charge.

Wembley Downs came back hard in the final quarter but could not bridge the gap and Subiaco recorded its first win of the season, and the boys celebrated by singing the club song loud and proud.

The coach’s awards went to Mo, Jack Monaghan, Will, James and Cam.

Round 1 versus Cottesloe at Cottesloe Oval.

We started with a tough fixture at Cottesloe, a team with some very skilled players.

Cottesloe got the feel of the very windy conditions earliest and quickly built up a lead before Subiaco rolled up their sleeves and started to doggedly contest every ball and James kicked Subiaco’s first goal of the year.

The second quarter into the wind was hard going for Subiaco and called for some tough defensive work and Angus, Cam, Jack M, Mo and Josh showed great determination.

In the third quarter Subiaco really lifted, applying good pressure and mounting some strong attacks. The value of helping each other and pure hard work was shown when Tom kicked a good goal to cap off some fine team play.

The good work continued as Subiaco really stood up strongly despite playing into the breeze in the final quarter, holding the talented Cottesloe forward line to 3.3 while kicking 2.1 themselves to come home really strongly.

It was a hard game and Subiaco fought it out in determined style, with the final siren seeing Cottesloe triumph 16.8 to 8.2

The drive and desire to get the footy showed by all in Subiaco colours in the last quarter is a good omen for the games to come.
